This news report discusses the 40,000 or so new laws that came into effect in the U.S. for 2010, including everything from more smoking bans to restrictions on tanning salons and the use of certain oils in restaurants. The reporter comments that "many politicians seem to revel in the power to legislate the details of people's lives." They should have added that pharmaceutical companies and other large financial interests pay these politicians handsomely for the laws they enact.
