THE SLIPPERY SLOPE

If anyone wanted an example of how a campaign to interfere in people's lifestyle choices on one issue transfers readily to more interference on other choices, the latest government initiative in Turkey fits the bill perfectly.

After legislating an uncompromising indoor smoking ban, the current government decided to apply the exact same series of strategies and rhetorical justifications (Think of the children! Promote healthy lifestyles!) to alcohol. This includes alcohol advertising and display bans, tax increases, marketing bans, and so forth:

Not so shocking, really, since we've been warning about this sort of thing since several years.

DRUG PROHIBITION CAUSES MORE PROBLEMS THAN IT SOLVES

The logic is infallible. By making drugs illegal, you push them underground and create an uncontrollable market. Producers and suppliers cannot solve their problems with lawyers and letters, so they resort to guns and bullets. As long as there is a demand there will be competition to supply the users, and as long as it is illegal, the profits will be huge.

Attacking the demand by jailing drug users is creating a huge problem of prison overcrowding and the costly redirection of resources from other more important needs of society. People's lives are being ruined by Criminal Records in ways fare worse than any token drug use could ever amount to, and drug addicts are being jailed instead of receiving assistance and treatment.

The "War On Drugs" is a failure on almost every count. Certain Canadian provinces as well as Mexico realized how detrimental to society was this failed Drug policy, but failed to implement reform due to pressure from the U.S. and its all-powerful Drug Enforcement Agency.

Now that the U.S. Senate is preparing to take a hard cold look at the facts surrounding drug prohibition, it is important that all lovers of freedom and enemies of Nanny Interventionism speak up and be heard. We encourage you to write to Senator Jim Webb, as per the link provided below leading to an article from L.E.A.P. (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition), and voice your support for a more rational, logical approach to recreational drugs.

Finally, Congress discusses prohibition!

ABOUT THE 1ST WOLRD CONFERENCE AGAINST PROHIBITION

Their attempts to stifle the debate by prohibiting the 1st anti-prohibition conference through despicable totalitarian tactics were thoroughly unsuccessful. The ‘’forbidden to think’’ conference at the Sylken Hotel in Brussels replacing the original scheduled conference at the European Parliament Building was a roaring success in uniting the cries of citizens from various countries with those of elected politicians and honest scientific authorities. The speakers were convincingly informative, the crowd was responsive, the spirits were high. All this was accomplished with a next to nothing budget with delegates from England, Whales, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Austria, the U.S.A., Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, paying for their own expenses contrary to what they want you to believe and their own chronic addiction to our taxes and pharma money for their fancy assemblies.

Much was brought to light during this rigorously scientific but nevertheless accessible to the ordinary citizen conference. From economic hardships that defeat their ‘’smoking bans are better for business’’ rhetoric, to the passive smoking fraud, psychological harms caused by the stigma and civil rights for everyone regardless of their lifestyle choices, make no mistake, the debate on tobacco prohibitions is far from being over. They can run from the truth but cannot hide forever. Freedom lovers, honest scientists and an ever increasing number of informed ordinary citizens will spread truth and hold those spreading bigotry and lies fully accountable for their immoral, unethical and inhuman actions. Even the biggest lies are sooner or later unmasked and truth lovers will see that it happens by any and every means possible. They can ban, slander, prohibit, intimidate, ridicule, shame, mock and threaten but they cannot and will not shut off the debate! And this of course is making them very very nervous and afraid. One of their
latest papers blatantly transpires their worries and apprehensions. They have every reason to worry. Sooner than they realize they will run out of excuses to evade honest debate and that is a promise!

C.A.G.E. delegates at the conference extend their sincere congratulations and thanks to the individuals who were mainly responsible for the organization of this world assembly and reiterate their continued collaboration and exchange towards free and tolerant societies for all.

LEARNING FROM HISTORY - ALCOHOL PROHIBITION REPEAL DAY

On this 75th anniversary of the U.S.A. alcohol prohibition repeal we would like to turn your attention to the Alcohol, Problems and Solutions website and particularly the newly published sections on the damages that prohibition caused in the 13 years it was in force.

When reading the literature, please ponder on the alarming fact that prohibitionists are alive and well and working tirelessly to bring back a new form of alcohol prohibition which much like the tobacco ‘’puff by puff’’ prohibition, is insidiously brought about in societies ‘’drip by drip’’ through social engineering that is financially backed up by powerful organizations such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and propagandized by ‘’virtuous’’ front groups such as the WHO and MADD. The day it will have become obvious and we will have waken up to a form of prohibition which just like tobacco it will not have banned the product but all practical use of it instead, we will rightfully wonder how we never learn from history. The more indoctrinated among us will even hail the neo-prohibitionist healthist movement, sheepishly buying the propaganda that it is for the betterment of us imperfect humans that need superior minds to dictate the ‘’right way’’ to live and die. But just like 75 years ago, prohibition will have brought nothing but havoc, crime and social discrimination exactly as the tobacco neo-prohibition is doing to societies today.

To better illustrate this last point, we have taken an excerpt from the Alcohol, Problems and Solutions series of articles and highlighted with asterisks and red links some perfect modern day examples of what is happening with the tobacco issue as compared to alcohol prohibition back then and as it will undoubtedly happen in the future if we let the neo-prohibitionists go ahead with their insidious plans to demonize even moderate consumption of alcohol to the extent they have demonized even moderate consumption of tobacco.

Prohibition and Repeal in New York State
by David J. Hanson, Ph.D.

Many residents of New York state had hoped that Prohibition (1920-1933) would reduce crime, improve health and safety, promote economic prosperity, and increase public morality. However, experience would prove the Noble Experiment to fail on all counts.

Mob-controlled liquor quickly replaced legitimate tax-paying alcohol producers and retailers. ** Tobacco Road ** Gangster-owned speakeasies replaced neighborhood drinking establishments and within five years after Prohibition was imposed, there were over 100,000 speakeasies in New York City alone by some estimates. So many speakeasies operated that New York was known as the "City on a Still''.

Mobsters opened large nightclubs with elaborate floor shows and popular bands. ." ** Inside NYC's Smoking Speakeasies ** Speakeasies and nightclubs flourished because law enforcement officers were widely bribed. In essence, the speakeasies and nightclubs bought "protection" from the very people paid to enforce the law.

Hypocrisy was endemic. ** MPs 'smoking in Commons toilets' ** A raid on one of the city's most famous speakeasies caught a number of its politicians and other leading residents. The most famous and successful Prohibition agents in the state, "Izzy" Einstein and Moe Smith enjoyed nothing more after a hard day of vigorously enforcing Prohibition than sitting back and enjoying their favorite beverages: beers and cocktails.

Organized smuggling of alcohol from Canada and elsewhere quickly developed after Prohibition became the law. A "rum row" developed off the coast of New York City where ships lined up just beyond the three mile limit to off-load their cargoes onto speed boats under the cover of darkness. ** CORNWALL RCMP DETACHMENT SEIZE 430,000 CONTRABAND CIGARETTES **

In northern New York, bootlegging was especially rampant across the St. Lawrence River separating the state from Canada. Murder and hijacking were common in the dangerous but lucrative bootlegging business. ** Smuggling's price **

An increase in often deadly violence eroded support for Prohibition. Imprisonment reached a high after it became a felony to violate Prohibition. ** JAIL TERM, FINES AMONG PENALTIES FOR TOBACCO OFFENDERS ** The number of violators sent to jail doubled and the federal prison population in the state jumped from 5,000 to 12,000.

Federal Prohibition officials inadvertently promoted Repeal by announcing that effective enforcement in the state would require hiring several thousand more Prohibition agents
** Government of Canada invests $20 million in anti-tobacco activities **. The state legislature's reaction was to pass a law calling for a constitutional convention to overturn the disastrous "experiment in social engineering." Residents of New York State had come to the conclusion that Prohibition was not only impossible to enforce, but that it also created rather than solved problems.

After Congress approved the 21st Amendment for states to ratify if they wished, New Yorkers voted almost eight to one in favor of Repeal.

Over the decades, New York has made progress in modernizing its alcohol laws. In 2003, the state struck down its Blue law banning Sunday alcohol by allowing stores to open any six days, including Sunday, benefiting time-pressed consumers as well as retailers who now have the ability to operate like every other business in this 21st century economy. The success of the stores that opened on Sundays led the legislature to pass permanent seven day sales earlier this year. New York also recently repealed an archaic ban on spirits auctions. Slowly, the remaining vestiges of Prohibition appear to be disappearing in New York.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AGAINST PROHIBITION - CONFÉRENCE INTERNATIONALE CONTRE LA PROHIBITION

(FRANÇAIS SUIVRA)

The 1st TICAP International Conference against prohibition will be held at the European Parliament Building, Brussels, Belgium on January 27 and 28, 2009.

Following is the press release on the conference and the link where you can read more and register your participation:

FIRST WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST PROHIBITION BY TICAP

PRESS RELEASE

London, UK, October 2008 - The International Coalition Against Prohibition (TICAP) will hold its first world Conference on January the 27th and the 28th, 2009. Because of its prominence in these times, tobacco prohibition was chosen as the theme of the inaugural conference. Unfortunately, the denormalization of smoking comes at the expense of many citizens' rights and it sets a very dangerous precedent, along with causing immediate and devastating economic repercussions.

The conference "Smoking Bans and Lies", will be held at The European Parliament Building in Brussels. Subjects presented for discussion at the gathering will include: the impact of smoking bans, passive smoking exposure studies, the pharmaceutical lobby and the politics of prohibition.
TICAP includes more than 20 organizations from all over the world who share the conviction that prohibitions are a threat to democracy and a free society. Once an individual's right to choose is eliminated, special interests are enriched and state intrusion is tremendously augmented.

With this conference, TICAP intends to lay the foundations of an active, world-wide opposition to the expansion of a political trend that uses questionable science and public health institutions as vehicles to control citizens.

During a summit meeting on May 1st to 3rd, aboard the Aldebaran, a sailing ship in Holland, several international groups signed a treaty against prohibition to be incorporated under the name of The International Coalition Against Prohibition (TICAP).

Several nations from Europe and North America are now bound in solidarity against smoking bans and other prohibitions in the making, that while lucrative for multi-national corporations, interest groups and governments who promote them, are damaging to societies and citizens.

The first plan of this collective effort is to hold an international conference against prohibition in the fall of 2008 or early in 2009. It is during that conference that strategies and objectives will be established.

C.A.G.E. is proud to announce that it has become a member of the coalition and is one of the groups representing like-minded Canadians.

The healthist political movement may have deep pockets, but we have dedicated activists who are motivated by justice and passion. Together we will bring back some common sense and balance so that we may all live our lives according to our own convictions and personal beliefs.

The International Coalition Against Prohibition (TICAP).
