AT THE END THE ''GLOBAL WAR ON TOBACCO'' WILL FAIL - Pr. Romano Grieshaber

There are reasons why many prominent professors, doctors and scientists speak up about the second hand smoke scientific fraud only after they retire.

‘’ “It would be very inconvenient for the WHO, should it turn out that their warnings about the health risks of secondhand smoke were based on gross exaggerations. And so one may guess the means and resources they use to fight dissident opinion and critical inquiry. I got to know them all: Deception, concealment, falsification, control of the professional media (and thus of professional interactions), as well as intimidation which goes so far that I’ve ceased to wonder why in the professional world hardly anyone dares to object when it comes to the subject of passive smoke.”

These are the translated words of yet another prominent professor who wrote a book exposing the lies and shenanigans the second hand smoke harm was built around.

He is Prof. Dr. med.  Romano Grieshaber and from 2000 until his retirement March 2011 he was the responsible leader of the Department for Prevention and Research at the “Berufsgenossenschaft Nahrungsmittel und Gaststätten (BGN)”, the German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association for the Food and Catering Industry. He is Honorary Professor of Applied Prevention and Health Promotion at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. He was board member of the “Forschungsgesellschaft für angewandte Systemsicherheit und Arbeitsmedizin (FSA)”, the German Research Association for Applied System System Safety and Occupational Medicine, member of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), and spokesman of the board of the “Kompetenzzentrum für interdisziplinäre Prävention (KIP)”, Competence Centre for Interdisciplinary Prevention at the University of Jena.

Pending a translation of his whole book perhaps in the future, a synopsis of his writings was translated in English through a collaborative effort of the well known British blogger Frank Davis and two of his commenters.  Please read the rest of it here :  Romano Grieshaber: The Unwavering Professor

''AND I STILL DON'T LIKE THE HELMET NAZIS '' - Karen De Coster

CAGE salutes Karen De Coster -- for reminding us that plenty of intelligent, freedom loving people still exist.

She had a bicycle accident where she credited her helmet for saving her life, yet can still easily understand why mandatory helmet laws are wrong.  One of CAGE's founders had a bike accident where he credits not wearing a helmet with saving his neck (he rolled out of the fall), and he very much appreciates the respect that Miss Coster shows other individuals.  It's also good to see others remark on the special interests making money from coercive health promotion, and North America's "pornographic obsession with safety equipment" in a "bubble society.

Helmet Nazis and theCulture of Fear
Teasers:
(...) The save-you-from-yourself nannies are an intrusive and irritating bunch. "Safety" has become a sick obsession in the modern American culture, and this fear mongering has long been promoted by an overreaching, paternal state that has churned out a nation of helpless idiots through the revolving doors of government schools and a politicized nanny state that holds people captive to their own bogus fears.

Your experiences are your own, and no one else can own the consequences of those experiences or relate to your personal misgivings.(...)

Hat tip to her for pointing us to the following video:

NEWS DIGEST

And some thought it would never go this far with obesity because being fat doesn’t ‘’hurt’’ other people.

---------------------------------------------------------

Isn't it nice to know how our donations and tax money are spent?   And to think that since there is no legal age for use and possession of tobacco, if we listened to these lobbyists, minors wouldn’t be able to enter a theatre to see a movie that depicts smoking but they would be able to hang out outside that same theatre smoking to their heart’s content in all impunity.

----------------------------------------

Good people disobey bad laws.

''Harkness says he doesn't plan to obey the law and will continue to blow smoke in the face of the expanded ban.''

--------------------------------------------------

Follow the money to understand exactly why offending ads such as the ones that Americans will be viewing for the next few months courtesy of the CDC  http://yourlife.usatoday.com/health/story/2012-03-30/CDC-Ads-spark-huge-increase-to-quit-smoking-line/53896854/1 are fair play but heaven forbid that the CBS projects anything that can make fun of the holier than thou deep pocket pharmaceutical industry.

Hopefully the CBS will get flooded with complaints from listeners.  If people still can't see the conflicts of interest between Big Media and Big Pharma is there still hope that they ever will?  Here's where you can write to express your thoughts to them:  http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php

FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND AROUND THE CORNER

Convincing evidence that New York’s mayor Bloomberg has totally lost it touch with reality:

----------------------------

One of the best examples of why government can't be trusted with social policy.

Veil of secrecy lifts slowly on decades of forced adoptions for unwed mothers around the globe.

                                             ----------------------------

It’s a common enough argument around the world at the moment, that various unhealthy behaviours increase the costs to health care systems. (…)The only problem with the argument is that it is entirely gibbering nonsense, unhealthy behaviours reduce costs to health care systems’’

----------------------------

There is big money to be made with anti-obesity and they don't care who they hurt in the process of making it.  Doctors will not be exempted from the stigma.

                                          ----------------------------

Conflicts of interest are running rampant in the anti-tobacco industry.

The ‘’Ottawa Model’’ is a blatant example of the same conflict of interests problem in Canada.

Please note how the program is strongly focused on NRT varenicline and buproprion.
And then note the conflicts of interest:

Robert D. Reid has received research support, speaking
fees, and honoraria from Pfizer, and is supported by a New

Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation

of Canada.

Andrew L. Pipe has received research support, speaking

fees, and honoraria from Pfizer.

Is it any wonder that the same Andrew L. Pipe worked diligently to have the controversial Ottawa outdoor smoking ban implemented?   Support creation of new smoke-free spaces

Since the link no longer functions, here's the letter he wrote in support of the Ottawa outdoor smoking ban.

Support creation of new smoke-free spaces
By Andrew Pipe, Ottawa Citizen February 6, 2012

Re: No smoking at Ottawa's outdoor patios, parks, Jan. 31.

I write to support Ottawa Public Health for introducing a bylaw that will eliminate smoking in outdoor spaces in Ottawa.

The importance of limiting exposure to second-hand smoke has been recognized for many years. Ottawa has provided distinct leadership in addressing this important public health challenge in the past; the adoption of the proposed bylaw will continue that tradition of public health leadership. It is important to ensure that current and future generations of Ottawans are provided with the opportunity to enjoy smoke-free public spaces and facilities. Our children deserve no less.

Evidence continues to accumulate, attesting to the reduction in cardiovascular incidents and deaths that follows the introduction of smoke-free environments. At a time when the sustainability of our health system is increasingly in question, it is paramount that we adopt evidence-based, best-practice approaches to disease prevention.

Our public health department, the board of health and our council are providing exemplary leadership in this respect and their efforts merit our congratulations and support.

Andrew Pipe, Chief, Division of Prevention and Rehabilitation, University of Ottawa Heart Institute

In Australia, whether you’re a criminal or not, plans to register your DNA are gaining momentum.

 ----------------------------

And speaking of Australia, you had better sit down stand up before you read this ‘’new’’ discovery.  A study from the University of Sydney suggests doctors prescribe "reduced daily sitting time" to their customers.  The study found that prolonged sitting will do us in within three years.  So perhaps the first logical step is to remove all chairs from our kids’ classrooms before they keel over?   Did we really need a study to tell us that moving around and exercising regularly is good for us?  What did this study cost the taxpayers?
