Through education from the pro breast milk movement and encouragement and assistance from caring health professionals, young mothers have been increasingly choosing to breastfeed  their infants.  But like many movements  that eventually  become overly ambitious and zealous,  the breastfeeding proponents  are on the verge of undoing all the progress they have done in educating mothers towards this more natural choice.  Indeed, women are now complaining about how insistent the hospital staff has become in their attempts to convince them to breastfeed even when they choose not to or can't for various reasons.  Some brief research on the internet  yielded the following results on mothers exasperated over the pressure they feel to breastfeed their infants : 

- They can be quite bullying. You don't have to do anything you don't want to but it's hard to say no.'' 

- Everytime a midwife came to talk to me they always made me feel like if I gave up I would be a failure.

- I couldn’t feed Nicholas, but I’d been told I had to stay in hospital until I succeeded...
In the end, after four days, I discharged myself. I fled. I felt as if I was escaping from prison.

- I have had two other children, didn't breastfeed them, for many reasons, and I don't even want to bother with it this time...so LEAVE ME ALONE!  When I explained this several times, each time she responded "Well, that's fine...but...."  But what....??  What don't you understand?  I kind of hate that lady now! 

- I seriously believe that is why so many Moms have a hard time Nursing nowadays... because their (sic) is so much damn pressure and stress behind it now. You are looked down upon if you do not.

Not surprising that Nanny Bloomberg, the New York mayor who thinks that no measure is too pushy or too tyrannical to get people to conform to his ideal of a ''better person'', couldn't resist to set yet another rule for his constituents.   '' New mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.  With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.'' an article in the NY Post reports.  As well,  as of  September 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use.   One hospital spokesperson explains:  “The key to getting more moms to breast-feed is making the formula less accessible. This way, the RN has to sign out the formula like any other medication. The nurse’s aide can’t just go grab another bottle.”

If this is not the nanny state running amok, nothing is.  Much like the various movements that go overboard when they become too confident of their successes, this  bully mayor has truly overstayed his welcome.  God help  New Yorkers between now and his final stepping down from office.

DEPUIS 2005 LE TAUX DE TABAGISME STAGNE AU QUÉBEC

Matière à réflexion sur des opinions tout à fait différentes par rapport au succès des lois répressives contre le tabagisme.   D'une part celles qui sont irréfléchies et incohérentes  des lobbyistes anti-fumeurs québécois et d'autre part, l'opinion réfléchie du tabacologue français le Pr. Robert Molimard qui, selon ce qu'on observe, s'avère vraie même au Québec :

Une lettre ouverte à La Presse envoyée par MM Couillard et Rochon, exprime le désir de ces deux anciens ministres de la santé de renforcir  la loi anti-tabac québécoise. 

'' La Loi de 2005 a étendu l'interdiction de fumer aux restaurants, aux bars et aux cours d'école en plus de faire disparaître les étalages multicolores et proéminents de produits du tabac dans les points de vente. Grâce à un ensemble équilibré de mesures incitatives et coercitives, la norme sociale en regard de la consommation du tabac a changé»  nous informent-ils. 

Pourtant cet ''ensemble équilibré de mesures'' a plutôt déséquilibré la cadence de la baisse  du tabagisme qui se poursuivait depuis  deux ou trois décennies.   

En effet, Mme Flory Doucas  de la Coalition québécoise pour le contrôle du tabac rapporte que  '' Depuis 2005, le tabagisme ne recule pas avec le même élan. Le taux de tabagisme stagne, ayant diminué de seulement 1,1 % en cinq ans. » 

N'est-ce pas alors que le Pr. Molimard avait tout à fait raison lorsqu'il nous mettait en garde contre les effets pervers des lois trop répressives dénuées de toute compréhension de la psychologie de l'être humain? 

"Mais le plus grave, pour qui se préoccupe de la santé des fumeurs, est que ces mesures drastiques se montrent contreproductives vis-à-vis du tabagisme. Les ventes officielles de tabac augmentent, sans que baisse la contrebande. La prévalence du tabagisme des jeunes s'accroît. Les consultations de tabacologie sont désertées. Les DIU de tabacologie n'attirent plus les étudiants. Par défense identitaire, les fumeurs se replient dans un "tabagisme retranché". Ils deviennent inaccessibles aux messages de santé publique."

Mais que veulent nos anti-fumeurs québécois?  Exactement ce qu'il ne faut pas faire -  renforcir davantage la loi anti-tabac et ainsi rendre les fumeurs complètement fermés et même révoltés contre les instances de la santé publique.  La bêtise humaine n'a décidemment pas de frontière! 

A WIKI FOR A WIKI

On  June 4TH we briefly mentionned in a French article about how tobacco control advocates in the UK resorted to intimidating tactics in an effort to silence any dissent from their group-think mentality.   Along with an article they  had published  in the Guardian  , they created a Wiki type of website in a hardly veiled effort to tie ordinary free-choice citizens to the tobacco industry and to label them as pro-tobacco. 

In response to this latest attack from  a UK chapter of the Tobacco Control Industry, members of various free-choice groups across the world put up a mirror Wiki site exposing the other side of the story .  This collective effort  reflects the extensive  knowledge and the many years of research and dedication  of  truly concerned citizens (smokers and non-smokers)  alarmed at how far the tobacco controllers have pushed the tobacco control goal posts over the years to the point of blatantly and shamelessly discriminating the same citizens they're paid to ''help''.  C.A.G.E. played an active role in building the site.   

When short of coherent arguments, ad-hom attacks are the weapon of choice of  anti-smokers, but apart from a dinner paid by some tobacco industry representative to a free-choice activist, or a brief exchange of correspondence, they can't produce any proof that any of the bloggers and free-choice activists who are fighting the exaggerations and outright lies of the Tobacco Control Industry are being funded by Big Tobacco.  On the other hand, there is plenty of  well documented proof  on how  the Tobacco Control Industry profits both from the public trough and corporate interests to sustain their ''do-gooder'' careers and you can discover much of what is going on by clicking here:  Tobacco Control Tactics

DES VÉRITÉS, DEMI-VÉRITÉS ET CONTRE-VÉRITÉS

In case you haven't yet heard, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, now wants to ban sugary drinks sold in formats bigger than 16 ounces.  For some comic relief here's an ad in the New York Times depicting Bloomberg for the nanny he is.

L'OFFENSIVE DE L'INDUSTRIE ANTI-TABAC

Si on juge le contenu de l'article Comment le lobby du tabac a subventionné des labos français paru dans lemonde.fr par le paragraphe qui nous réfère au discours qu'une déléguée de C.A.G.E. a livré au nom du Pr. Robert Molimard, cela en dit long sur le sérieux de la recherche que les journalistes ont effectué avant de rédiger leur article !



'' En janvier 2009, il sera invité à en parler aux côtés de plusieurs ex-consultants ou proches de l'industrie du tabac lors d'une conférence contre la prohibition du tabac, organisée à Bruxelles par le réseau The International Coalition Against Prohibition (TICAP). Alerté par trois organisations antitabac, le Parlement européen qui devait accueillir cette conférence dans ses murs l'interdira à la dernière minute. Elle aura néanmoins lieu dans un hôtel tout proche...''

Le professeur Molimard fut invité à cette conférence par l'organisme C.A.G.E. qui n'a aucun lien avec l'industrie du tabac et prétendre le contraire relève de la diffamation. Dans sa grande sagesse et sachant à quel point les anti-fumeurs étaient en quête d'une telle occasion pour le discréditer, il a préféré faire lire son message par une déléguée de C.A.G.E. plutôt que de faire acte de présence à une conférence ''maudite'' par le fait même qu'elle défiait le dogme anti-tabac.


Est-ce qu'on pouvait compter parmi les autres délégués à la conférence des individus qui à un certain moment de leur carrière avaient reçu une rémunération pour faire des recherches sur le tabac? Nous ne le connaissons pas tous personnellement pour être au courant du moindre petit détail de leur passé, mais cela peut effectivement être le cas pour certains délégués quoi que nous sommes absolument certains que les organisateurs pour leur part n'avaient aucun lien avec l'industrie du tabac. Mais la vraie question qu'on doit se poser est, si cela est vraiment un crime d'accepter des fonds de l'industrie du tabac (surtout dans une époque où ce n'était pas encore un péché mortel) tant que la recherche reste intègre.


Le Professeur Molimard a pour sa part reçu une aide financière de Philip Morris dans les années 90 pour maintenir son laboratoire de recherche sur le tabac. En quoi est-ce que cela l'a empêché d'orienter sa carrière vers la recherche des méthodes efficaces et humaines pour aider les fumeurs à abandonner leur tabagisme? Sa feuille de route et ses deux livres consacrés à la cessation du tabac témoignent de sa position on ne peut plus claire contre le tabagisme. En quoi cela a bénéficié aux compagnies de tabac? Il est fondamentalement anti-tabac, mais ne base ses croyances que sur la vérité et son expérience en la matière. Les anti-fumeurs modernes auraient tout intérêt à tirer des leçons d'humanisme et d'intégrité de lui.


D'ailleurs pourquoi est-il acceptable et politiquement correcte pour un chercheur de recevoir des fonds de l'industrie pharmaceutique qui a tout intérêt de dénormaliser les fumeurs dans le but à peine voilé de les forcer d'arrêter de fumer? Et ceci seulement après leur avoir inculqué à coups de marteaux sur la tête pendant au moins deux décennies qu'ils sont trop dépendants pour cesser sans médication (parfois très dangereuse et souvent très dispendieuse)? Pourquoi ce deux poids deux mesures? Serait-ce que plusieurs anti-fumeurs sécurisent leur carrière par les fonds de l'industrie pharmaceutique si généreusement octroyés à la cause anti-tabac?


Par ailleurs, les anti-fumeurs de la France ne sont pas les seuls qui, craignant qu'il commence à avoir trop de gens qui exposent leurs manigances, ont fait publié des tels articles. Les anti-fumeurs britanniques ont fait tout autant employant des tactiques d'intimidation pour faire taire les blogueurs britanniques qui sont pour la liberté individuelle de fumer sans être constamment harcelés et ostracisés pour leur choix tout à fait légal.
